To get the best…

Minimising the substantial losses from staff turnover starts with good hiring process and rigour   Everyone knows that staff retention is important, right?  That’s why we measure it (you do measure it, don’t you?).  But few companies bring that measurement through to the bottom line.   Why?… because it’s often regarded as a “soft-cost”, too rubbery for the balance sheet, too uncertain for the CFO. I find this puzzling, as there is at least as much firm data about calculating the cost of staff churn as there is about executive remuneration… and those figures never seem to be quite so soft! Proof of Work?

6 Feb 2013

Recently, we were asked an interesting question about one of our customers’ recruitment policies… Q: “Are you familiar with a process whereby staff to be appointed must complete a Statutory Declaration that verifies that they did in fact work at their previous workplace.” We discussed this amongst the team here at Expr3ss! Mission Control, thinking about what it actually means to submit personal information for a job via the web.  We came to the view that, assuming that references are properly taken up by the employer, this should be unnecessary. A: “It must be the employer who takes up the references,…  Read More

Your Applicants are People too…

Applicants are people too.

How many times have you seen and heard “our team is important to us”, “our people are our greatest assets” and “it’s our people that we need to thank for our success.” Then why are applicants treated so badly during the recruitment process?  After all, one or more of these very same applicants later will become a co-worker, a part of the same company, perhaps even a part of your own team. Have recruiters forgotten what it is like to be an applicant?… have you? You’ve probably had your own job for quite some time now.  Perhaps you are now…  Read More

We wish you all an Awesome 2013! At Expr3ss! we’ve always believed in giving something back.  This year we’ve added a Smith Family child sponsorship to our regular monthly charitable donations, as we mentioned in our Christmas blog.  This is a continuing sponsorship:  we’re in it for life. Again, if you’re not yet familiar with the Smith Family, then check out their “Little Heroes” video … but, caution!… you might find yourself moved to donate too.  But that wouldn’t be a bad thing, hey? So who or what is “The Smith Family’, and why support them? The Smith Family is a secular…  Read More

We can’t see the cost-saving…

Every so often a potential customer looks at Expr3ss! and says something like, “We love it but we can’t see the cost savings”. Huh??? I guess for those of us here at Expr3ss! Central, this is the weirdest thing.  It seems so obvious to us that when someone just doesn’t get it we’re totally in shock.  We have to pick ourselves up off the floor and say, “Of course cost-savings can be difficult to identify… but let’s see what we can discover with a little thought” . OK… so where are they, all these savings? Our existing customers have documented…  Read More

Windows 8 the other browsers

If you missed the news that Microsoft released Windows 8 this week, then you’ve probably been on retreat somewhere that the Internet can’t reach.*  Either that or it was a great party!… and why wasn’t I invited? Windows 8 is the all-singing, all-dancing Microsoft foray into the world of touch devices.  Designed for the new “Surface” tablet, this is MS’s late debutante at the hardware ball, destined to become either the belle or the wallflower. It’s a radical departure which sees the infamous start button and desktop relegated to the back blocks.  In its place you’ll find something akin to…  Read More

Did you know that Expr3ss! has been fully mobile-friendly since 2010? Yes we’ve had a dedicated mobile channel working nicely on iPhone, iPad,  iTouch and Android devices for two years now.  And it’s more popular by the month, most especially last month. So what happened in September?  QRCodes happened, that’s what. I guess most of you already know about QRCodes, they’re a bit like two-dimensional barcodes with “secret herbs and spices” Here’s what one looks like… You scan them using a smart phone’s camera and one of many free apps (we like Qrafter ourselves).  They can take you to a website…  Read More
